Why, how or what?
How often do you ask yourself: why do I do what I do? Why my employer employs me? Why is my business successful? I don't do it very often; in fact, in everyday rush, I often forget what's important. I lose the "why" from horizon. It's a mistake - but it's a common one, made by individuals as well as large companies.
Simon Sinek in his TED talk described, why big, innovative leaders can change the world. Using examples like Wright brothers and Apple, iPad and aeroplane, he shows that the main source of success is the vision.
There are three types of organizations: the ones that know what they do, the ones that know how they do it, and the ones that know why they do it. "What" companies are common but medicore, and can easily fail. "How" companies are less common, but they usually don't change the world. Only the ones that know "why" they exist - and share their vision with their market - can possibly change the world.
Yes - sharing matters, as my coworker Paul says on his blog. Many people are afraid that their ideas - so called "intelectual rights" - will be stolen. But in fact, it's not so easy to stole a vision, a sense of "why" you do some things. You could steal "what"; if you have a sophisticated industrial espionage team you could even sometimes steal "hows" - but stealing "why", stealing an idea is much more difficult. You can't steal a soul. Not easily at least.
To be honest, I currently live in a "how" mode: I'm not interested in details of work done, I'm only interested in "how" to do it to be most efficient and effective. I think there is a long way for me to get to the "why" point, but I'll try my best to achieve it.
